We at YOHOBOX are deeply saddened by the recent incessant flooding across Kerala with thousands of people displaced, untold misery, loss of life and property. We salute the people of rain-ravaged Kerala for their fighting spirit. We also salute the various govt. agencies assisting 24/7 in these relief operations.

Our thoughts and prayer are with all the families and their loved ones of those who have lost their lives, but only thoughts and words are not enough.

As the water level has started to recede, we all can see the massive destruction floods have caused, rebuilding Kerala could take years as the calamity has displaced over a million people who are currently staying at various relief camps spread across the state.

As the rains ease, the focus should now be immediately on aiding those whose houses and livelihoods were destroyed, a scale of rebuilding which will require a vast sum of money. Govt. assistance alone is not going to be enough to make people’s lives whole again. So we request every Indian to do what they can to help get families and local businesses back on their feet.

We on our part have as always, donated financial aid to chief minister fund along with relief material including blankets, toiletries, medicines, clothes, and food grains.

At YOHOBOX we have a GROW GREEN initiative, where we teach and encourage young children to be responsible and plant more tree saplings.

Floods have been a recurrent phenomenon in many parts of India, causing loss of lives and public property and bringing untold misery to the people, there is also a larger economic impact as they derail economic activities.

We urge the national government and agencies like central water commission (CWC) and national disaster management authority (NDMA) together, draft a national policy on “Channelisation of Rivers” and thereby constructing a parallel channel bye passing, at least in certain reaches to divert a part of the peak flow to another river or basin to pass it’s floodwaters and silt load, thus reducing the blood flow and thereby prevent or reduce spilling of food water.

Some will say these steps can’t guarantee tragedies like in Kerala or Assam will never happen again. They may be correct – but if common sense reforms are enacted and when hundreds of life will be saved, it will have been worth it.

We believe it’s time for every Indian citizen to support initiatives like these and hope others join us in efforts to make Kerala again become “God’s own Country”

Wishing all a very Happy Onam
Sincerely,
YOHOBOX Team
